The Indian Institute of Science, founded in 1909, is an institution of higher learning to pursue excellence in postgraduate education and research in several fields of science and engineering, and is the oldest and finest centre of its kind in India. The size of the Institute kept deliberately small to focus on quality. It is the first institute to introduce master’s programmes in engineering, more recently the integrated Ph.D. programmes in Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences for Science graduates. The Institute has pioneered many fields of activity like Aerospace, Communications, Electrical, Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Material science, and has acted as a reservoir from which the leadership and manpower for the future scientific developments and industries can be drawn. New initiatives have been taken up in several emerging areas of importance, such as space science and technology, environmental and atmospheric science, endocrinology, genetic engineering, developmental studies in rural technologies, and energy problems. The Centre for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy (CSIC) and Society for Innovation and Development (SID) provide the interface to the industries, which enable faculty to closely interact with industry. In all its endeavors, the Institute strives to contribute to the scientific, academic and technological goals of India, with a keen awareness of its noble tradition, and the need for maintaining a high quality in all its activities.

Department of Management Studies
The Department of Management Studies, established in 1948 as a section of Economics and Social Sciences, is one of the oldest management schools in the country. It represents the earliest attempt to systematically train manpower, create and spread the knowledge required for managing industrial enterprises in India. From a humble beginning I the immediate post-independence year, it has emerged into a Centre of Excellence, in the finest traditions of its parent institute, the Indian Institute of Science. The Department strives constantly to deliver quality management education in tune with the changing industrial scenario. The Department offers an MBA programme exclusively for engineering graduates. It has very strong research programmes leading to Ph.D. and M.Sc.(Engg.) degrees in management. There are about thirty research students (full time, teachers from engineering colleges under QIP, and external registrants who are practicing professionals from industry) working in functional areas like Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations Management and Marketing and in the areas of Economics, Energy, Transportation, Technology Management. The Department is actively involved in Industrial Consultancy, Sponsored Research and Management Development Activities

 Programme Structure
The MBA programme is a two-year full time postgraduate course. The major objective of the programme is to enable graduate engineers to grow into competent, responsible and creative managers for technology intensive global business. The technology intensive business organizations market high technology products and/or services at global level and integrate all their business functions (research & development, design, manufacturing, marketing, logistics, human resources, finance, legal and patent aspects, etc.) using information technology. Whether the concern is creation of new business opportunities, technology transfer, strategic alliances or technological innovations, organizations require leadership from those who have a sound understanding of the organizational and technological underpinnings as well as its strategic goals. The future managers need to understand forces shaping the global business environment, should be able to assess threats and opportunities offered by the fast changing technological scenario, should have a sense for "responsible progress" and should become architects of the future. The managers of technology intensive business organizations should be able to take advantage of sophisticated quantitative tools while retaining the intuitive and qualitative understanding of business processes. This demands a judicious mix of experiential and formal learning processes. The current programme is a novel attempt towards meeting these objectives.

The structure of the programme covers a total of 64 credits comprising Hard Core Courses (30 credits), Soft Core Courses (9 credits), Elective Courses (15 credits) and Projects (10 credits). All the courses are organized on semester basis. Some of the courses which are laboratory oriented or activity oriented are organized as 2:1, that is, two lectures per week and one three hour laboratory (activity).
The programme can be broadly divided into the following :
Basic Competence: Quantitative Methods, Information Technology , Project Management and Personal Development.
Business Environment: Macro Economics, Indian and International Business Environment, and Legal and Patenting Aspects
Functional Areas: Marketing, Finance and Accounts, Production and Operations Management, Human Resource Management.
Specialization: Electives and Project Work.
Summer placement in industries that gives a first hand feel of operations in an industry.
Project on Entrepreneurship: This is expected to give first hand experience to students in creating a new business. Project work will be preceded by two-week intensive inputs related to entrepreneurship from the experts.
Management Project: This project is expected to give an experience in understanding and formulating management problem, and solve it. This exercise should lead to preparation of a research paper.
