Time - that’s what always been the worst managed part of time group products. But the organization is such a huge one that they have sustained every where they have entered, though they are not the market leaders. There are many who still read times of India for articles related to bollywod stuffs but never for anything serious. They started ZOOM when people in India were bored with the entertainment channels and then came TIMES NOW (I think u must have heard about it – no kidding I love to watch THE GAME program of this channel). timesJOB is online for quite a time but it was late to got the investiture. Naukri was a novel & innovative idea in late nineties and still the leader in job market portals in India. Monster and Jobsahead came up with new technologies and huge investment and both were early starters but timesJOB came to the market when it was saturated and had nothing new to offer. But it took some market share because of the money they spent on advertisement and with the power of indiatimes and times of India it was able to sustain the competition. So, the question arises – can the late comers – following other successful models will be the achievers? If not then why biggies do it. I am not sure if it is lack of enough innovative ideas or the easier path to be successful that motivates companies. But it is being done regularly in Indian business arena. I am against the fact that if one FM channel exists then we don’t need another one but the entrant should come up with something new else it does not make any sense for a consumer like me. Coming back to the business model of Naukri, it was an instant hit and got all the headlines during its early age because the idea was fresh but the company did followed the achievements of Bharatmatrimoy and launched Jeevansathi which has failed to bring much visitors to the site after many advertisement campaigns on TV. So where does things stand? My bet - if you believe in business then think something out of box, which no one else has ever imagined about. After your success many biggies will follow but will never be able to catch you.

IRMA 2 in Bhubaneswar

KIIT deemed University with the help of Verghese Kurien (the man behind India's first rural management school - IRMA) is going to set up a rural management institute in Bhubaneswar in parallel with Institute of Rural Management at Anand. KIIT is one of the premier Engineering colleges in orissa. In last one decade the institutes has achieved many mile stones and has been successful in bringing many talented professors to it. The proposed institute‘ll be named as Kalinga School of Rural Management (KSRM) and KIIT has allocated 15 acres of land for it. The plan is to start the course in July 2007 with an initial intake of 100 students. For the first batch KSRM ‘ll conduct a test on its own but later it ‘ll take students on the basis of CAT score. The students will get an MBA degree in rural management. There is also one more proposal of starting an mba program specially designed for NGOs. A Samanta, KIIT Vice-Chancellor is very much enthusiastic about the project. He started it all by requesting Mr. Kurien to find out the possibility of a rural management college similar to IRMA in last august. Afterward two ex-IRMA faculty members, L K Vaswani and H Panda visited KIIT campus to check out its viability. Satisfied with the details Kurien agreed to go ahead with the venture and will be the director of KSRM.

Student Demands for Retest of CAT 2006

Students who took the Common Admission Test this year are now showing their annoyance over the errors in the question papers. Few days back students in delhi went on a candlelight march on this issue and now some students in lucknow has requested the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to look into the matter. Students have asked the IIMs to publicly announce the errors in CAT and the action taken to neutralize the effect under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Few have also gone up to the extent of asking a re-test of CAT 2006, which IIMs have already discarded. Till now IIMs have only confirmed the errors and said that the errors are related to editing and printing and thus the faculties who set the paper can’t be held responsible for it. Though IIM authorize have already announced that they will let every one know the corrective steps taken by them. But the candidates are in no mood of taking any back step. They have decided to go to courts, if IIMs fail to come up with a solution satisfying all.

Big Plans for ICFAI

ICFAI (The Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India) - which has few privates universities in the states of Uttaranchal, Tripura, Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Jharkhand is planning to increase the number of private universities to 15 by year 2010. The total cost is estimated to be of Rs. 1,000 crore. Private University is a university which does not receive any financial support from the government. The concept of private universities is new in India but its supremacy can be seen in all over the world esp. in countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia and other developed countries. ICFAI has already allocated lands in Nagpur (54 acres), Kanpur (60 acres), Chandigarh (50 acres) and Jaipur (40 acres). ICFAI has also started building its own campus on one-million square feet in Dehra Dun with a budget of Rs. 90 crore. The first phase of the campus in Dehra Dun is expected to complete by June this year. In addition to all these, ICFAI is building a 1.5-million square feet campus spread over an extent of 93 acres in Hyderabad .The facilities available in ICFAI Hyderabad are the best among all its campuses in India and the college is always ranked among top20 b-schools in India published by various magazines and organizations. The institute will be converted into a university once the Andhra Pradesh government implements its decision of introducing a Bill facilitating the establishment of private universities in the state. ICAFI is always considered as a high charging institute but it does spend a lot of money on scholarships. Across the country, ICFAI currently has 4,000 MBA students, 2,000 engineering students, 1,500 rural MBA students and 1.2 lakh students who have been registered under its distance education programme. It charges a fee of Rs 5 lakh for the two-year MBA course and Rs 4 lakh for the four-year engineering course.

Guys Outperformed Gals in getting IIM calls

CAT 2006 results are out and all the IIMs have published the short listed candidates for next round of Group Discussion and Interviews. Guys have out performed gals in all departments of CAT 2006. For IIMB the percentage of gals who are short listed for GD/PI is only 17.87 % out of the applied 24.7% .The scenario is almost same for all the other IIMs. The resistance against OBC reservation on the account that many will get a chance to study in IIMs with out scoring at per with general candidates is confirmed wrong. Many OBCs have scored well ahead of the general category applicants; the difference in the average marks obtained between the general category shot listed candidates and the OBC short listed candidates is a just 2%. The average percentile of OBC candidates shortlist is 97.73% - which can never considered as bad. The myth that engineers are not good in English is proved wrong as this time also most of the short listed candidates are from Engineering background though the English section was the toughest in the paper. Following the raising trend of Engineers making in to IIM, this year IIMB have shot listed 904 engineers out of total 1065. This years results shows that indian B schools have started giving importance to Industry experience while sending the call letters . Among all the short listed candidates 61.77% had prior relevant work experience. The most shocking aspect of this years result is that students with ZERO score in English section have got percentiles up to 35. This clearly indicates how tough was the English section with more than one-third of the students scoring zero or less than that. Many students who scored 99 percentile in quantitative analysis and data interpretation secured zero in English.

CAT 2006 Answers

All top-coaching center has published solutions for CAT 2006 in their web sites. PT India was the first to complete it as they did it last year. The process of publishing solutions was first started by Career Forum way back in year

2001 when they had published more than 45 solutions in mathematics out of the 50 questions.

 That was a big achievement considering the fact that at that time students were not allowed to keep CAT paper after the exam. All students were supposed to return the question paper with the OMR sheet But some how both PT and CF were able to provide partial solutions. The scenario was very much similar till the year 2003. Back then students had no option but to wait for the result to know their performance.

Though TIME was the last to publish the answers in their site they have the best explanations to all the answers. Career Launcher has gone up to the extent of predicting percentile and according to the site the expected percentile table is as given below.

The site claims to have considered 8000 students feedback in preparing the percentile table. IMS has collected 24000+ students performance and will publish a comprehensive analysis on 22nd November. Erudite has also published the solutions on its site.

The predictions on percentile may not be perfect but the seriousness shown by all the institutes towards the cat takers is remarkable. Few hours of proper analysis with all these answers and information can make students judge their stand in the exam and help them in deciding future course of action.

Candlelight March against CAT Errata.

After a hectic time of few weeks, CAT aspirants got some to show their exasperation against the imprecision of questions in CAT 2006. After CAT many students might not have got enough time to properly analyze the paper due to IRMA and IIFT, both scheduled just one week after CAT. Now IIFT is over and the next scheduled exam JMET is on 10th December , giving all the mba aspirants some much needed time to think about what went wrong in CAT. For a group, it was the erroneous paper and they went on a candlelight march in delhi with black band on their arm to show their disappointment against it. . Admission chairpersons of all the six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) plan to meet by next week to discuss about the errors in CAT 2006 paper and to figure out some sort of formula so that no cat taker suffer because of it. It is highly unlikely that IIMs are going to publicly declare how they are going to negate the effect of wrong questions in the exam. Even if they decide not to consider those questions for the final evaluation it ‘ll go against those who have attempted it correctly. There was also a question with only 3 options instead of 5. In the mean time students are planning to lunch an internet signature campaign to make their agitation felt in all over the country. CAT has been an exam of repute for many years. Except the questions Paper leak in the year 2003 there was never been any untoward incident. Students got to understand that such minor things might happen when exams are held in such a huge scale. IIMs always do their best to slect students on the basis of merit and they know the best way to select the right candidate for their institutes.

Pepsi/Coke - A good lesson

The second round of attack on cola companies in India with the issue of pesticides seems to be over. Both the cola giants have come up with advertisements which try to show that the process in which Coke/ Pepsi are made is quite hi-tech and there is least chance of pesticide or for that matter any harmful contents. These advertisements are quite unique in the sense that for the first time soft drinks are trying to convince the general public that their product (of Rs 5 to 40) are not harmful to their health. Pepsi started it by showing Mr. CEO in the advertisement and coke followed it with Amir Khan (now a day he seems to be taking very much interest in our socio-economic issues). These ads in no means are meant to show their product as good rather it is an attempt to show that their product is not bad. We can say this as a defensive advertisement rather than an aggressive campaign and its happening for the first time in India. All the companies should take a good lesson from it - If it's tough to make a brand image then it's tougher to maintain the image in public - esp. in countries like India where a single article/report makes a lot of impact on the society. May be our society has not matured enough to wait and see " what the things are? " - Before giving any verdict. It's always felt that in India it's very easy to create a brand image or at least its easy for a new brand name to be on lips of general public but no one has ever given a though to it - its very tough to maintain the image. There are few things that all the companies must follow in order to sustain their values in the market. First and foremost is to maintain the quality of the product. There is no alternate to it. For products like electronics goods, home appliances and other such things where the technology changes very fast, it's tougher. Not only they have to maintain their product value but every day they have to look for newer ads on to their product. There can't be a better example than Apple. Before lunching a new version of the iPOD in market they do a test of their next product. But it shouldn't be a tough job for consumable products like coke, biscuits, soaps and other things which we use in our daily life. These companies just need to produce the same standard all the time. I am not saying that these sort manufactures don't need to do that much of R&D or come to market with newer product. They should but with time, they are never required to be in a hurry. The perfect example is LUX which still has a great market share and good image value among general public. Its products have not changed much with time; its advertisement theme has always been the same. But with time it has changed the look, it has changed the models and has been successful in remaining public mind till Now.

MAT on 6th may 2007

The second MAT exam of the year 2007 will be held on 6th may 2007. The MAT bulletin for the exam on 6th may is now on sale. The form is available at all the AIMA nodal centres, selected branches of UTI bank and at some of the participating B-schools. IIMB's Double Shot - fee hike & seat increase

Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (IIM-B) has increased it s annual fee to Rs. 2.5 lakh for the Post-graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme. Currently the fee stands at Rs. 1.75 Lakhs. The decision was taken on Monday at the governing body met headed by Mr. Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries.

Announcing the fee hike after a board meeting on Monday, IIM-B director Prakash G Apte said, "At an earlier board meeting, we were deliberating over the Rs 2-lakh figure, but at the IIM, we spend Rs 4 lakh per student. Since most of our students come from a fairly comfortable background, we fixed this amount." and to justify the fee hike he later added "Average starting salaries today are in the range of Rs 10-12 lakh. I am sure students can afford Rs 2.5 lakh." And he is not wrong - "this year, approximately 75 students from IIM-B accepted foreign placements which is an increase of 50 per cent over last year's 50 students who accepted such offers". The students are not worried about going to countries to which they have had little or no exposure, for they have been trained in the skills required to handle different cultures. A small hike in fee shouldn't make anything to worry about.

Regarding the IIMs stand on needy students, Apte said, "Our commitment towards deserving candidates will continue. No student will be turned away from IIM for want of money,"

In another major decision, IIM-B will increase the number of seats in the coming academic year from 240-270 to accommodate the OBC quota. The intake for the public policy programme is likely to be increased to 40 from 30. "The IIM-B would increase the intake from 240 to 270 in the coming academic year to accommodate OBC candidates in a phased manner as per the Veerappa Moily-headed Oversight Committee's recommendation that 27 per cent of the seats in higher educational institutions should be reserved for OBCs,"Apte added. "The infrastructure we have today is enough to accommodate the present increase in intake. However, any further increase would need new infrastructure. Likewise, we can manage with the present faculty now. But, if the student strength went beyond 270, then we need extra faculty," he said.

Till Now Only few handful institutes had announced in the number of seat increment to accommodate OBCs according to the new govt. of India policy. Many top b schools are expected to give their exact figures in next couple of weeks.

IIM results dawdling: 21st might be the D day

The 6 IIMs have deferred the admissions for the academic session 2007-2008 till 21st April. IIMs have reiterated that they are not in a position to implement the quota if the government fails to solve the impasse. The Centre is most likely to go the Supreme Court this afternoon in the OBC quota case. All the IIMs were supposed to declare their result on/before 12th April but the confusion started when the Union HRD Ministry sent out a letter to all centrally-aided institutes, including the IIMs and IITs, asking them to withhold declaration of entrance examination results till the Supreme Court decided whether or not to lift the stay on implementation of OBC quotas in this academic session. Part of the latter as published in news paper/portals and shown on TV channels "You are advised not to issue any offers of admissions in institutes under your control for the ensuing academic session until you receive further communication in this regard from the central government." Earlier the IIMs have sent a letter to the MHRD to clarify the matter and tried their best to publish the list on time. If the HRD ministry and the IIMs do not come to a decision soon, it’s the students who will stand to lose out the most. Unworried by the situation all Private management schools are going ahead with their admissions and selected students have been asked to pay the first installment of fees, making students more confused. XLRI has fixed the deadline to pay its first fee installment on 20th april and the amount is around 2 lakh. For other institutes the amount varies from Rs 10,000 to Rs 4 lakh . Though Institutes refund a part of the first installment in case of a student pull out and joins an IIM, the amount is always much less than what students required to pay while confirming their offer latter.

Reservation – why, its achievement and its failure to deliver

Well before we slam the politicians and all let’s look in to the past and observe why was the reservations done in the first place and its present impact.

In the past(before independence) its true that the higher classes enjoyed more benefits - I mean what all the titles like Rai Bahadur,  and etc were mean tot create a social unrest which was utilised to its best by the British.

It seems that to reverse things a bit and also appease the SC/ST s reservations were made. Moreover the census of 1932 too showed that the SC/ST s and OBCs were larger in numbers. So it can be said that for general appeasement of masses it was also a political step by the Country makers at that time. Moreover with the proximity to USSR at that time the word "equality" may have sounded different at that time.

Reservations were made not only in castes but also between states at lets keep J & K out of this since it had its own problems to deal with.

If we look into most of the Government PSUs made after independence we would observe that they intentionally kept Maharashtra and West Bengal out of it purview since they were the most developed states during in and around independence. Former being the seat of the commercial capital and the later being the seat of the country's capital in the past. Rather New Delhi being the capital of India only for 96 years whereas Calcutta was the capital from 1772 to 1911 - 139 years.

Now initially there was a time frame for implementing the "social upliftment" - the term coined by all those pro-reservation politicians (may be that includes everyone except Sidhu pajji) now. After that time frame got over it was found that they still lag behind so it was increased and more time was given but it reached its peak with the "Mandal commission".

Now after 60 years of independence if "social upliftment" has not been achieved then it clearly indicates the process thus chosen was wrong. Reservation always meant to deny the deserving from the pie and give it to some who doesn't deserve it. Frankly this whole drama is appeasing the masses but there is a flip side of it. It's this that General Category class is still ahead. It meant that due to competitions for fewer seats the generals are getting better day by day. And they are still ahead despite of all the reservations against merit.

Who is actually benefiting, are the labour class of SC/ST s benefiting? NO!!! The service class is biggest and perhaps the only benefactor. The people whom we meet everybody in our offices, schools, parks, restaurants belonging to this class are "THE" biggest benefactor.

Reservation in my opinion should be made for every one who heralds from a lower economic status for one-time for either govt. jobs or govt. educational institution. Once availed it cannot be used for the next 3 generations and that too after calculating the economic status. This would ensure that it comes to an end one day.

There is another point I would like to make is why did politicians suddenly warmed up for reservations in premier institutions and private firms. Well, during Mandal commission, our present PM Dr. Manmohan Singh did introduce something called "Liberalisation". Credit to him  for having such a long-sighted concept, slowly it became apparent in the late nineties early millennium that there aren't sufficient jobs in the government sector and most of them were going after private firms - that meant that reservation in government sector is not that valuable any more. So this is the only way out. But kudos to Private firms and IIMs, IITs and not forget the medical fraternity who has the biggest influence in the social setup who stood up against this "social menace". But above all the Supreme Court who proved time and again that it would not be the part of cheap politics.

AICTE instructions regarding refund of fees for B schools

The AICTE has announced new guidelines for B school to deduct the processing fee when a student leaves the institute before the commencement of classes. As per the new instruction no institute can deduct more than Rs. 1000. Previously there was no such law and institutes used to retain huge amounts of the initial payment made by students while confirming their seats to a particular program.
