How to solve Q14

Most of the questions are quite easy in this QBM except Q14 How to go about solvin that

solving Q14.

Lets start with assuming that B does the job in 'x' days and C does in 'y' days. So, A does it in 'x+5' and also in 'y+9' days. equating the 2, x+5 = y+9 => x=y+4 ----(1) now A per days does '1/(x+5)' amount of job, B does '1/x' amount of job. A and B per day will do ' 1/(x+5) + 1/x ' amount of job. So they will complete in ' 1/(1/(x+5) + 1/x) ' days. now, 1/(1/(x+5) + 1/x) = y ----(2) => x(x+5)/(2x+5) = y, putting value of 'x' as per eq. 1 we get, (y+4)(y+9)/(2y+13) = y => y^2+13y+36 = y^2+13y => y^2 = 36 => y=+6 (since no. of days cannot be -ve). So, C completes the job in 6 days. Therefore, A will complete in 15 days. Ciao, Subhashis
