Q1. A cistern is normally

Q1. A cistern is normally filled in 6 h but takes 4 h longer to fill because of a leak in its bottom. If the cistern is full, the leak will empty it in how much time?

Sol: Time taken to fill the cistern=6 hours.
Cistern filled in 1 hour=(1/6) th of the total capacity.
Let the time taken by the leak to empty the cistern when it is full be "a" hours.
Due to leak it will take 4 hours more i.e, total of 10 hours.
According to question,10(1/6-1/a)=1

Solving, a=15 hours.

Ans: 15 hours.

Q13. A works twice as fast

Q13. A works twice as fast as B. if B can complete a piece of work independently in 12 days, S and B together can complete the work in:
a)4 days
b)6 days
c)8 days
d)18 days

Sol: Let A complete a work in "a" days.
Then B will complete that work in "2a" days.
If B can complete a work in 12 days ,A will complete it in 6 days.

Let A & B can together complete that work in "b" days.
So,b(1/12+1/6)=1
Solving,b=4 days.

Ans: 4 days.

Q6. Ten pipes through which

Q6. Ten pipes through which water flows at the same rate can fill a tank in 24 minutes. If two pipes go out of order, how long will the remaining pipes take to fill the tank?
(a) 40 minutes
(b) 45 minutes
(c) 19-1/5 minutes
(d) 30 minutes

Sol:10 pipes can fill the tank in 24 minutes.
So,1 pipe can fill the tank in 24x10=240 minutes.
So,8 pipes can fill it in,24x10/8=30 minutes.

Ans: (d) 30 minutes.

Q9. A can do a piece of work

Q9. A can do a piece of work in 6 days, B in 8 days and C in 12 days , B & C together do the work for 2 days and then C is replaced by A. Find the total time required to finish the work?

Sol:Let A and C work together for "a" days.
So,2(1/8+1/12)+a(1/6+1/8)=1.
a=2 days.
So,total days (2+2)=4 days.

Ans:4 days.

Q10. 15 men take 21 days of

Q10. 15 men take 21 days of 8 hours each to do a piece of work. How many days of 6 hours each would 21 women take, if 3 women do as much work as 2 men?
(a) 20
(b) 25
(c) 18
(d) 30

Sol: Work of 3 women=Work of 2 men.
So,work of 21 women can be done by 14 men only.
15x21x8=6x14xa

a=30 days.

Ans: (d) 30 days.

Q8.The Buna dam has four

Q8.The Buna dam has four inlets. Through the first three inlets, the dam can be filled in 12 minutes; through the second, the third and fourth inlet, it can be filled in 15 minutes; and through the first and the fourth inlet, 20 minutes. How much time will it take all the four inlets to fill up the dam?

Sol: Let the alone time of the four pipes be a,b,c,d minutesreapectively.

According to question,
12(1/a+1/b+1/c)=1
(1/a+1/b+1/c)=1/12  ...(i)
15(1/b+1/c+1/d)=1
(1/b+1/c+1/d)=1/15 ...(ii)
20(1/a+1/d)=1
(1/a+1/d)=1/20  ...(iii)

Equn (i)-(ii) gives,
(1/a-1/d)=1/60...(iv)
Now eqn  (iii)-(iv) gives;
a=30,d=60.

Let the time taken to full the tank when all the four pipes work together be"e" minutes.
So,e(1/a+1/b+1/c+1/d)=1
or,e(1/30+1/60+1/20)=1
Solving will give the value of e=10 .

Ans: 10 minutes.

Q12. Two guys were working

Q12. Two guys were working on your car. One can complete the given job in six hours, but the new guy takes eight hours. They worked together for two hours, but then the first guy left to help another mechanic on a different job. How long will it take the new guy to finish your car?

Sol: Let the time taken by the second guy to complete the work when the 1st gut has left be "a" hours.
According to question,
2(1/6+1/8)+a/8=1

Solving,a=10/3 hours.
=3 hours 20 minutes.

Q5.A water tank has three

Q5.A water tank has three outlet taps A, B and C. A fills 4 buckets in 24 min, B fills 8 buckets in 1 hr and C fills 2 buckets in 20 minutes. If all the tapes are opened together, a full tank is emptied in 2 hr. If a bucket contains 5 L of water, what is the capacity of tank?

Sol:A can fill 4 buckets in 24 minutes.Time taken to fill 1 bucket be A=6 minutes.
B can fill 8 buckets in 60 minutes.Time taken to fill 1 bucket =60/8 minutes.
C can fill 2 buckets in 20 minutes.Time taken to fill 1 bucket=10 minutes.

Let the time taken to fill 1 bucket when all the three taps works together=a minutes.

a(1/6+8/60+1/10)=1
a=60/24 minutes.
This implies that if all the three taps are working they will take 60/24 minutes to fill  1 bucket.So,in 120 minutes they can together fill,120x60/24 buckets.
And 1 bucket has the capacity of  5 L.
So,the tank capacity=120x5x60/24=1500 L.

Ans:1500 L
